T.W.A.S. Oct. 7-10th

It was a short week but it was busy! Here are the highlights:

K: We wrote a paragraph about the story "Stone Soup."  The themes of the story are community, being thankful, giving, and gratitude. 
L: A new character was introduced in The One and Only Ivan named Ruby, a baby elephant.
L: In math groups we are working on place value and addition.  Today we made a place value puzzle matching 4-6 digit numbers with their expanded form. 
T: In Literacy groups we started working on persuasive writing.  Some of the topics were: should students have extra recess; should students chew gum in school; should students have as many books as they want from the library; and should students have homework? Ask me which issue I chose.
A: In Science we are working on a presentation about saving the wetlands.  We have to research information and then we are making either a GoogleSlide Presentation, a poster, or an iMovie.

Wetland Field Trip

On September 26 our class was able to visit Ralph Klein Park as part of the Science study of Wetlands.  We were able to enjoy a beautiful day; first with a pond dip studying aquatic invertebrates, then a nature walk, and of course, playing at the fabulous outdoor play structure.

Thank you to ConocoPhillips (who sponsored the entire trip - including the bussing) and the parent volunteers for their hard work throughout the day!

T.W.A.S. (Sept 30-Oct 4)

This week we did our Agamograph Art and studied about life cycles for our agamograph.                  We also studied about Terry Fox, how he raised money for cancer research, before he had cancer, when he had cancer and a wrap up.
We also did a summary of a new novel called ''The One And Only Ivan''.
We also posted a new video about our fake [fiction] story's on Iris.
Fall Break is coming up! It's on Oct 10- Oct 21 (1 week).

The Beauty of Fall

I have the privilege of attending a 6-part teacher training series called, "Land-Based Indigenous Education Professional Learning," where the goal is to build relationships with the land through Indigenous pedagogies designed to support student learning.  I shared a bit of what I learned with the class today, then we decided to take advantage of the weather and head outdoors to the treed area behind the playground. 

Students were tasked with finding beautiful leaves and were amazed at what they could see when they looked closely. And before long the lady bugs must have wondered what we were up to because all of a sudden they were everywhere!  Once we'd observed the lady bugs for awhile we came back in to use oil pastels and recreate our leaves in our sketchbooks - with beautiful results.  Stay tuned for more outdoor learning throughout the year!

Terry Fox Run

T.W.A.S. Sept 16-20

Another busy week!!  Here are the learning highlights!

New math groups started this week.  All groups are looking at place value concepts in a variety of tasks.  Grade 4 students need to be able to represent 4-digit numbers and Grade 5 students work on representing 5-digit numbers.

In Science, we began looking at adaptations on wetland animals.  Students began researching a wetland animal and are sketching and writing their physical and behavoural adaptations.

Mapping continued in Social Studies.  Some students are completing homework this weekend - either their own creative map or a map of Canada.  The instructions for the Canada map are below.

We have shared a few texts this week - the favourite by far was "Into the Woods."  Ask your child to describe that book and how we were able to make Text-to-Text Connections.  Students also completed a picture prompt writing activity - either with an outer space theme or an underwater theme.

T.W.A.S. (Sept 9-13)

This week's post is completed by Ms. Rutland - as we ran out of time to complete it as a class!

Math - Students finished their work in the graphing unit this week.  Please check out a sample of your child's work either from a work sample sent home or digitally on Iris or SeeSaw.

Science - We looked at Animal Classification this week and then used books and photographs to classify animals that could be found in a wetland ecosystem.

Social Studies - Students completed their Mapping Booklets and have moved on to applying their knowledge of maps to creating their own map of either a real or imagined place.  The rubric for this task is below.  This has been shared with students so that they are aware of what is expected at each proficiency level.

L.A. - We moved into a new grouping where students have been placed onto a team (blue, red, or green).  Each team has been working on writing through making connections to quality literature.  This week, students have made connections to self using the books The Darkest Dark, Franklin's Bad Day, and Stone Soup.

Our school had the privilege of the Dare-to-Care Program on Wednesday, Sept. 11th.  In this program students learned the difference between conflict and bullying and some strategies to use if they find themselves in these situations.  We will continue to build on the ideas shared throughout the year.
